Assam CM Calls for Enhanced NEET Security and Format Changes Ahead of 2025 Exam

The National Testing Agency (NTA) intends to conduct the NEET UG 2025 test on May 4, 2025, afternoon session between 2 and 5 p.m. The exam this year will be held in 13 languages and will run for three hours, or 180 minutes.

NEET UG 2025 will see drastic changes in the exam pattern and application process. As per changes brought by the NTA, the pre-medical entrance test will return to its pre-COVID pattern, with 180 compulsory questions to be solved within 180 minutes. In addition, the previously available section-wise option system has been removed, making all questions compulsory for candidates.

Given these developments, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called for tighter security measures to guarantee the integrity of the NEET UG 2025 exam. Referring to a meeting with the Director General of NTA and other officials on April 14, Sarma noted concerns raised by Assam Police after a clandestine investigation revealed unusually high marks among students who were appearing for exams at private exam centers in the state.

What are the proposals of the Assam government for holding the NEET UG 2025?
The Assam government has suggested a series of measures to enhance security and monitoring during the NEET UG 2025.

  • CCTV coverage at all examination centers.
    • SOPs for candidate selection and on-ground checks by Superintendents of Police and District Commissioners.
    • Exam centers are cleaned before testing. – Senior police and civil officers are deployed to supervise and monitor the exam process. – Chief Secretary, Director General of Police (DGP), and NTA DG closely coordinate to ensure effective implementation.

CM Sarma underlined the need for zero tolerance towards malpractice and demanded stern legal action against anyone attempting to interfere with the exam process. “We are devoted to conducting every exam in the fullest possible manner of transparency and NEET being a very crucial exam, we are mobilizing all resources to ensure its fair and smooth conduct,” he added. NEET test will only be conducted in government schools at Assam. After that, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has endorsed the Chief Minister’s request. In addition, the state government has undertaken correspondence with the center regarding it.

The Chief Minister said on Facebook, “I asked the Union Minister if we may hold the NEET exam at government schools under strong monitoring and security. He accepted my request and promised to make amendments to conduct NEET only in government schools in Assam. We have already engaged with the central government, and NEET exam centers for May will be established only in government schools in Assam.”

“Extensive verification, including Aadhaar and biometric authentication, would be used to prevent fraud. Without criticizing prior NEET selections, we hope to ensure more meticulous inspection this year,” the CM continued.
