Empowering through education, the village of Patwa Toli in Bihar’s Gaya district has once again made headlines as over 40 of its students cleared the JEE Mains 2025 Session 2 examination. Known as the “village of IITians,” Patwa Toli has become a symbol of academic resilience and achievement, particularly for students from low-income families.
This year’s results, announced on April 19, show that 28 of the successful candidates received their coaching from Vriksha Sansthan, a free educational initiative founded by former IITians. The institution has been guiding and mentoring students from marginalised backgrounds since 2013, especially the children of local weavers.
Among the top scorers is Sagar Kumar, who secured 94.8 percentile. Having lost his father at birth, he found both hope and opportunity through Vriksha Sansthan. “I want to serve the country by becoming an engineer,” Sagar told ETV Bharat, expressing gratitude for the support he received.

Pratik, another bright student whose father works as a gatekeeper at IIM Bodh Gaya, achieved a 96.35 percentile. Asmita Kumari, who scored 91.82 percentile, also comes from a modest background. Their stories reflect the determination and discipline that define Patwa Toli’s educational journey.
Other top scorers from the village include:
- Sharanya: 99.64 percentile
- Alok: 97.7 percentile
- Shaurya: 97.53 percentile
- Yash Raj: 97.38 percentile
- Shubham: 96.7 percentile
- Ketan: 96.00 percentile
- Nivas: 95.7 percentile
- Gaurika Yadav: 95.1 percentile
Patwa Toli’s shift from a textile-driven economy to an education-driven legacy began in 1991, when Jitendra Patwa became the first from the village to join IIT. Now settled in the United States, he continues to support the village through his non-profit, Vriksh We The Change. His story sparked a wave of ambition that has touched nearly every household in the area.
With a population of around 20,000, Patwa Toli was once known as the Manchester of Bihar due to its vibrant textile industry. Today, it is celebrated as a centre of academic excellence, where the power of education is transforming lives one success story at a time.
