Karnataka government requests NMC to increase medical seats as NEET aspirants increase

“The difference between demand and supply is so huge and it touches the conscience of all of us. The NMC should act,” he said while addressing NMC’s chairperson Dr B N Gangadhara who was present at the event. The Karnataka government urged the National Medical Commission (NMC) to greatly expand undergraduate medical seats nationwide on Wednesday, expressing worry about the growing disparity between the number of NEET applicants and available medical seats.

At the 2019 Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Research Institute (SABVMC) graduation ceremony, Minister for Medical Education and Skill Development Sharan Prakash Patil stated that while more than five lakh students take the NEET exam annually, there are only about one lakh medical seats available.

“This discrepancy requires urgent attention. He noted the demanding training and strong demand for Indian medical professionals worldwide, saying, “The doctors we train in India are not just for our country, but for the world.”
The disparity between supply and demand is glaring. Speaking to NMC chairperson Dr. B N Gangadhara, who was in attendance, he declared, “The NMC must step in.”

A formal proposal to approve an additional 800 undergraduate and 600 postgraduate medical seats in Karnataka beginning this academic year has already been submitted to the NMC, according to Patil.

The minister emphasized the government’s intention to build a medical college in each district, reaffirming the state’s commitment to developing healthcare infrastructure. “We intend to establish cancer care units, trauma centers, and super-specialty hospitals in every district, and each of these colleges will have a hospital,” he stated.

“This initiative has been approved by the chief minister. Districts lacking medical colleges would soon have fully functional establishments, enabling worthy individuals from underprivileged backgrounds to study medicine at public expense, he continued.
In his speech, NMC chair Dr. Gangadhara emphasized the approximately three crore doctors that are needed worldwide and urged the next generation to pursue careers in medicine.

“Indian physicians are highly sought after globally due to their solid academic backgrounds and fluency in English. The production of internationally renowned medical experts is one of NMC’s main objectives, he stated.
