How the New IIT Plans Will Grow Student Numbers

About the next four years, the combined number of students at IIT Tirupati, IIT Palakkad, IIT Bhilai, IIT Jammu, and IIT Dharwad would rise by about 6500.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Union Cabinet approved the expansion of five Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on Wednesday, allowing them to receive additional teaching positions, seats, and infrastructural improvements.

With the addition of 1364 students in the first year, 1738 students in the second year, 1767 students in the third year, and 1707 students in the fourth, the combined number of students at IIT Tirupati, IIT Palakkad, IIT Bhilai, IIT Jammu, and IIT Dharwad will increase by over 6500 over the course of the following four years.

The creation of 130 new posts for professors has also been approved for these five IITs.

The number of students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs at these five IITs will rise from 7111 to 13,687.

During her February budget statement, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced 6500 more seats at five IITs.

Additionally, 130 new professorial positions have been authorized for these five institutions.

Over the next four years, until 2028–2029, an expansion budget of Rs 11,828.79 crore was allocated. Along with research parks, this will also involve infrastructure developments.

These five IITs were established after 2014, making them third generation IITs. Although they started off using temporary space, permanent campuses have been established in recent years.

The project is being built in stages, with the first phase concentrating on a collection of academic buildings, dorms, and laboratories. Later phases will likely concentrate on further facilities of this type, as well as research parks, sports facilities, and guest rooms. According to a press release, the Cabinet approved the phase-B building of these five IITs on Wednesday.
