Lovely Professional University Ends Ties with Turkey and Azerbaijan

Lovely Professional University (LPU) has made the decision to terminate all its Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with institutions in Türkiye and Azerbaijan. This move comes in light of these countries’ pro-Pakistan stance amid the recent tensions between India and Pakistan.

In an official announcement, LPU stated that it has immediately ended six MoUs that included student exchange programs, joint research efforts, dual degree initiatives, and various collaborative projects.

“When our brave armed forces are putting their lives on the line—whether it’s through covert operations, air defense, or border patrol—we, as an institution, cannot just stand by,” said Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and Founder Chancellor of LPU. “LPU’s mission has always been about supporting the growth and integrity of India, and we will not partner with any institution that threatens India’s sovereignty.” lovely lovely lovely lovely lovely lovely lovely lovely gh gh gh gh gh gh gh

The backlash follows reports that Turkey provided over 400 drones to Pakistan, which were allegedly used during recent conflicts with India. This has led Indian academics and student groups to call for an end to all partnerships with Turkish institutions. hg hg hg hg hg hg hg hg hg hg hg hg gh gh hg hg hg hg hg hg

On May 15, Jamia Millia Islamia announced the suspension of all MoUs with Turkish universities, stating on X, “Due to national security considerations, any Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, and any institution affiliated with the Government of the Republic of Turkey is suspended with immediate effect, until further notice.” hg hg hg hg hg hg hg hg hg hg hg hg gh gh

Earlier this week, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Kanpur University took similar steps. JNU ended its partnership with Inonu University, declaring, “JNU stands with the Nation.” Kanpur University also withdrew from its agreement with Istanbul University, labeling Turkey as a “strategic ally of Pakistan.”

LPU’s recent decision adds to the growing trend among Indian academic institutions that are actively stepping back from countries seen as unfriendly to India. Dr. Mittal pointed out that national security goes beyond just the battlefield, saying, “National security isn’t just about what happens at the borders—it needs to be protected in every classroom, boardroom, and through international partnerships.”

Before this, several other Indian institutions have also chosen to suspend their relationships with Türkiye.

IIT Roorkee has officially cancelled its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Inonu University in Türkiye. This MoU was meant to set the stage for potential academic and research collaborations, including exchanges of students and faculty. hg hg hg hg hg hg hg hg hg hg hg hg gh gh hg hg hg hg hg

Institutions like Jamia Millia Islamia, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) in Hyderabad have also severed ties with Turkish institutions, following Türkiye’s support for Pakistan and as a step towards ‘protecting national interests.’
