Record Financial Support for Mumbai University Students

Financial aid worth Rs 2.74 crore has been disbursed by the University of Mumbai to support economically weaker and socially marginalised students for the academic year 2024–25. The assistance was distributed through four student welfare schemes under the university’s Department of Students’ Development, marking the highest-ever annual disbursal to date.

This year’s financial aid reflects the university’s growing commitment to inclusive education, with the amount surpassing previous records:

  • 2020–21: Rs 1.57 crore
  • 2021–22: Rs 1.77 crore
  • 2022–23: Rs 2.09 crore
  • 2023–24: Rs 2.42 crore
  • 2024–25: Rs 2.74 crore

Four Welfare Schemes Empowering Students
The aid has been distributed through four key schemes aimed at specific student groups across affiliated colleges and university departments.

  1. Book Bank Scheme
Rs 1.06 crore was allocated to 27,471 students from affiliated colleges and 57 students from university academic departments. This scheme provides essential textbooks and study materials to students from low-income backgrounds.
  2. Financial Assistance for Economically Weaker and Backward Students
Rs 6.38 lakh was distributed among 198 college students and 22 department students, helping reduce the financial stress of higher education.
  3. Aid for Scheduled Tribe (ST) Students in Colleges
This initiative saw Rs 1.01 crore granted to 1,950 students from 21 affiliated colleges. Among the recipients were 1,103 male and 847 female students.
  4. Support for SC, ST, DT, and NT Students in University Departments
Rs 60 lakh was allocated to 120 students in various departments under this targeted scheme.

Transparent and Digital Disbursal
To ensure a smooth and transparent process, the university accepted applications through a dedicated online portal created by the Department of Students’ Development. The digital platform streamlined the application and selection process, reducing delays and ensuring that funds reached deserving candidates efficiently.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Ravindra Kulkarni said, “This initiative is a commendable step to support the educational journey of financially and socially disadvantaged students. Every year, the university allocates a substantial budget to ensure that more students benefit from these schemes.”
