Four Indian Universities Make It to the Top 100 in THE Impact Rankings 2025
In a proud moment for Indian higher education, four institutions from India have been featured among the top 100 in the recently released Times Higher Education THE Impact Rankings 2025, published on June 18. These rankings evaluate universities worldwide on their contributions toward the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham leads the Indian pack, securing the 41st spot globally. It is followed closely by Lovely Professional University at 48th, JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research at 56th, and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences, which stands at 96th.
Globally, Western Sydney University in Australia retained its number one position for the fourth consecutive year. It is followed by The University of Manchester (UK) and Kyungpook National University (South Korea) in second and third place, respectively.
An interesting trend this year is the dominance of Asian institutions in the SDG-specific rankings. According to THE, Asian universities clinched the top spot in 10 out of the 17 SDG categories, underlining their growing influence and commitment to sustainable development. Among emerging economies, Universitas Airlangga in Indonesia stood out, tying for the 9th position overall, making it the highest-ranked university from an emerging economy.

How Other Indian Universities Fared in the impact rankings 2025
Beyond the top 100, THE Impact Rankings classify institutions into broader ranges instead of specific rankings:
- In the 101–200 band: Manipal Academy of Higher Education, KIIT University, Anna University, and BS Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science and Technology
- In the 201–300 range: Nitte (Deemed to be University)
- In the 301–400 range: IIT Gandhinagar, Manipal University Jaipur, Centurion University of Technology and Management, Chitkara University, Dr. DY Patil Vidyapeeth (Pune), Shiv Nadar University, and Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences
- In the 601–800 bracket: IIT Guwahati and Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT)
- In the 1001–1500 band: IIT Mandi, NIT Silchar, and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)
This year, a total of 2,526 universities from 130 countries or territories participated in the rankings, making it one of the most comprehensive global evaluations of institutional impact on sustainability.
As Indian universities continue to strengthen their focus on sustainable development, these rankings are a testament to their growing global presence and responsibility toward building a better future.
