GGSIPU Delhi announces a weekend-mode PG Mass Communication course at USMC East Campus. Open for working professionals and diploma holders. Apply by Sept 4.
Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), one of Delhi’s leading public universities, has taken a significant step to make higher education more accessible for professionals in the media industry. The university has announced the launch of a postgraduate programme in Mass Communication in weekend mode, to be conducted at its University School of Mass Communication (USMC), East Campus.
This initiative is particularly aimed at working journalists, media professionals, and communication enthusiasts who wish to upskill themselves without having to step away from their current jobs. The weekend structure ensures that students can continue their professional careers while also upgrading their academic qualifications.

Programme Highlights
The newly introduced postgraduate programme will span two years and will admit 60 students per batch. The annual course fee has been set at ₹95,000. Applications for the programme are already open on the university’s official website.
Interested candidates must fill out the application form online and then submit the completed form, along with a bank draft of ₹2,500 in favour of the University’s Registrar. The documents are to be submitted at the University Facility Centre, Dwarka Campus, before the deadline of September 4.
Admission Process and Eligibility
The programme welcomes graduates from all academic backgrounds, provided they hold a recognised bachelor’s degree. The selection process is designed to balance both academic performance and personal aptitude. Admissions will be based on:
- 70% weightage to marks obtained in the candidate’s bachelor’s degree.
- 30% weightage to performance in a personal interview.
This approach ensures that students are evaluated not only on their past academic achievements but also on their communication skills, motivation, and suitability for a career in media.
Detailed eligibility criteria and programme requirements are available in the official notification on the university’s admission portal: ipu.admissions.nic.in.
A Flexible Path for Working Professionals
What sets this programme apart is its weekend mode of learning. This structure has been crafted keeping in mind the hectic schedules of journalists, PR executives, media consultants, and other communication professionals. Classes conducted on weekends mean that participants can balance work responsibilities during weekdays and dedicate time to advanced academic learning on Saturdays and Sundays.
Prof. Durgesh Tripathi, Dean of USMC, explained that the course was developed in response to repeated requests from professionals in the media industry. “Many working journalists have long expressed the desire to pursue postgraduate education, but their jobs don’t allow them to attend regular weekday classes. This weekend mode is our way of bridging that gap and making higher education inclusive for them,” he said.
Special Provision for Diploma Holders
Another unique feature of the programme is the lateral entry option for diploma holders in Mass Communication. Candidates who already possess a recognised diploma in the subject will be able to complete the postgraduate course in just one year, rather than the full two-year duration. This not only saves time but also acknowledges the prior knowledge and training of such candidates.
Meeting Industry Demands
The introduction of this programme comes at a time when the media and communication industry is undergoing rapid changes. With the rise of digital journalism, social media platforms, content creation, and multimedia storytelling, professionals in the field are expected to constantly upgrade their skills.
A postgraduate degree in Mass Communication equips individuals with advanced training in reporting, editing, media management, digital content creation, research methodologies, and media ethics. For working professionals, such academic exposure can open doors to leadership roles, teaching opportunities, or specialised areas like corporate communications, advertising, and media strategy.
A Step Toward Lifelong Learning
By offering a weekend mode postgraduate programme, GGSIPU has addressed a growing demand for flexible and inclusive education. The course ensures that professional commitments do not become a barrier to higher learning. Instead, it provides a structured pathway for career advancement, making it especially relevant for those who want to combine hands-on work experience with advanced academic insights.
With applications already open and the deadline approaching, this is a golden opportunity for aspiring media leaders and professionals to take the next big step in their careers without pausing their professional journey.
