A sharp drop in temperatures across Jharkhand has prompted authorities in Ranchi to extend the closure of all schools until January 10, as a severe cold wave continues to affect large parts of the state. The decision comes amid growing concerns over student health and safety, particularly for younger children who are more vulnerable to extreme winter conditions.

The closure applies to all schools across Ranchi district, covering every category of institution—government, private, aided, unaided, minority-run, and residential schools. Classes from kindergarten to Class 12 will remain suspended during this period. Officials clarified that the move is precautionary and aimed at preventing cold-related illnesses as temperatures remain unusually low for this time of year.
Cold Wave Alert Across Multiple Districts
Weather conditions across Jharkhand have worsened over the past few days, with cold winds sweeping through the region and night temperatures dipping close to freezing in several districts. A yellow alert for cold wave conditions has been issued for 13 districts, including Ranchi, warning residents to stay cautious during early morning and late-night hours.
Districts likely to experience similar conditions include Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra, Hazaribag, Latehar, Lohardaga, Ramgarh, Bokaro, Gumla, Khunti, Simdega, and West Singhbhum. Authorities have advised people in these areas to limit outdoor exposure, especially children and the elderly.
Temperatures Plunge Across the State
Several districts in Jharkhand have recorded near-freezing minimum temperatures, highlighting the severity of the cold spell. Hazaribag emerged as the coldest location in the state, with temperatures dropping below 3 degrees Celsius. Other districts such as Khunti, Daltonganj, and Lohardaga also experienced intense cold, with minimum temperatures hovering just above the 3-degree mark.
In Ranchi, the state capital, the minimum temperature settled at around 8 degrees Celsius, which, combined with strong winds, significantly increased the chill factor. Industrial towns like Bokaro and Chaibasa recorded minimum temperatures in the range of 6 to 7 degrees Celsius, further underscoring the widespread nature of the cold wave.
Meteorological experts attribute the sudden drop in temperatures to north-westerly winds in the lower troposphere, which are pushing cold air into the region. According to weather forecasts, minimum temperatures are expected to remain steady over the next couple of days before gradually rising by up to three degrees Celsius later in the week.
Why Schools Are Being Closed
Health officials and education authorities have stressed that early morning exposure to extreme cold can lead to respiratory infections, hypothermia, and other seasonal illnesses, particularly among young children. Many students travel long distances to school, often in open transport, making them more susceptible to cold-related health risks.
The decision to extend school closures reflects a broader trend seen across northern and eastern India, where district administrations are prioritising student safety over academic schedules. Officials have indicated that reopening dates will be reviewed based on weather conditions and updated forecasts.
Parents have largely welcomed the move, noting that foggy mornings, cold winds, and low visibility make daily commutes unsafe for children. Schools have been advised to stay prepared for a phased reopening once conditions improve.
Advisory for Parents and Schools
Authorities have urged parents to keep children indoors during early morning hours and ensure they are adequately dressed in warm clothing. Schools have been asked to remain alert and communicate reopening schedules clearly to parents and students.
In districts where schools remain open or partially operational, administrations may consider delayed start times or reduced school hours as an alternative to full closures, depending on local conditions.
Cold Wave Likely to Persist Briefly
While forecasts suggest a gradual improvement in temperatures later in the week, weather officials caution that cold wave conditions may continue intermittently. Residents have been advised to follow weather advisories closely and take necessary precautions.
For now, students in Ranchi can expect a brief pause in academic activities, with safety taking precedence over routine schedules. Authorities have reiterated that the situation is being monitored closely and that further decisions will be taken in the best interest of public health.
