Schools Shut in Several UP Districts
Educational institutions across parts of western Uttar Pradesh have been directed to remain closed as the annual Kanwar Yatra enters its peak phase. District administrations have announced temporary closures in several areas to ensure the safety of students and staff and to facilitate smooth movement of lakhs of Kanwariyas travelling along major routes.
The decision applies to schools, colleges, and other educational institutions in affected districts, although authorities have clarified that scheduled examinations, where notified, will continue according to the existing timetable.
Districts Affected by the Closure
District administrations in Meerut, Ghaziabad, Baghpat, and Muzaffarnagar have announced temporary closures, with the duration varying slightly between districts. In Meerut, Ghaziabad, and Baghpat, institutions are expected to remain closed until August 12, while Muzaffarnagar has announced closures based on local administrative requirements during the yatra period.
Officials said the orders have been issued to minimise traffic congestion, avoid disruption caused by large religious processions, and ensure public safety.
Kanwar Yatra Leads to Traffic Restrictions
Every year, the Kanwar Yatra witnesses millions of devotees travelling on foot to collect holy water from the Ganga and offer it at Shiva temples. The large-scale movement results in road diversions, traffic restrictions, and heavy congestion across major highways in western Uttar Pradesh.
To manage the pilgrimage efficiently, local administrations often impose temporary restrictions on traffic and public movement, with educational institutions being closed as a precautionary measure.
Students Advised to Follow Official Updates
Education authorities have advised students, parents, and school managements to regularly check notifications issued by their respective district administrations and institutions. Schools are expected to resume normal functioning once the pilgrimage concludes and traffic conditions return to normal.
Students appearing for board examinations or other scheduled assessments should confirm examination timings directly with their institutions, as exam schedules may continue despite the temporary suspension of regular classes.
Safety Remains the Priority
The temporary closure reflects the administration’s effort to balance educational activities with public safety during one of North India’s largest annual religious gatherings. By limiting student travel during periods of peak congestion, authorities aim to reduce risks while ensuring the smooth conduct of the Kanwar Yatra.
Normal academic activities are expected to resume after the notified closure period, subject to further administrative review.
