Clashes broke out between ABVP and NSUI at Delhi University’s KMC College on the last day of DUSU campaigning. Police deployed as polls near.

The Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election campaign ended on a tense note after a violent clash broke out between members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) at Kirori Mal College (KMC) on Monday. The incident has sparked political outrage, with allegations and counter-allegations flying as the campus prepares for polls.
Clash Before Ajay Rai’s Visit at KMC
According to reports, the clash took place shortly before Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai was scheduled to arrive at KMC to extend support to NSUI’s Purvanchal student candidates. Rai, who has been actively campaigning across Delhi University campuses, was expected to address students and boost morale for the Congress-backed student outfit.
However, just ahead of his arrival, a violent scuffle allegedly broke out between ABVP and NSUI members, disrupting the planned programme and creating panic on campus.
NSUI Alleges Targeted Attack on Purvanchal Students
In a statement released soon after the incident, NSUI accused ABVP members of deliberately targeting its Purvanchal student supporters. The organisation described the incident as a calculated attempt to intimidate students and derail their campaign momentum.
“This clearly exposes ABVP’s deep-rooted hatred towards Purvanchal students and their frustration with the overwhelming support NSUI is receiving,” NSUI said in its statement.
NSUI leaders also alleged that the violence was not spontaneous but “pre-planned,” calling it a “desperate move” by ABVP to instill fear ahead of the elections.
No Immediate Response From ABVP
While NSUI has openly accused ABVP of hooliganism, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-affiliated student body has not issued any immediate response. University sources indicated that ABVP may be preparing a formal statement, but at the time of reporting, no official clarification had been made available.
This silence has further fueled NSUI’s claims that ABVP is avoiding accountability.
Reacting swiftly, Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai released a video message while on his way to the campus. He condemned the incident, blaming ABVP for instigating violence due to what he described as “fear of losing ground.”
“ABVP is rattled by the massive support NSUI is receiving. The violence at KMC is proof of their fear. I am coming to stand with you,” Rai assured students in his video statement.
Rai’s intervention was seen as a morale booster for NSUI supporters, especially Purvanchal students who have become an influential voting bloc in the upcoming elections.
Strongly condemning the incident, NSUI described the clash as nothing short of “hooliganism.” The organisation argued that intimidation tactics would not work against students determined to bring change through democratic means.
“This act of violence is shameful. But students will not bow down to fear. They will respond through the power of their vote,” NSUI declared.
The group urged Delhi University students to remain united and not let violence overshadow the electoral process.
Police Deployment at KMC
The clash forced authorities to step up security at KMC. Police personnel were deployed to the campus to prevent further escalation. While no major injuries were reported, the atmosphere remained tense as campaigning officially drew to a close.
Delhi University officials have appealed to both student organisations to exercise restraint and ensure that the elections remain peaceful. The DUSU elections, scheduled for September 18, hold significant importance in the political landscape, often seen as a launchpad for future national leaders. The counting of votes will take place on September 19.
Both ABVP and NSUI are locked in an intense battle, with each side seeking to consolidate its support base across colleges. The Purvanchal student community, in particular, has emerged as a decisive factor in this year’s elections, making Monday’s incident even more politically charged.
What this means for Students ?
The clash at KMC highlights the growing intensity of campus politics, where issues of identity, community support, and political allegiance intertwine. For many students, the incident has served as a reminder that campus democracy must be protected from violence and intimidation.
While NSUI has positioned itself as a defender of student rights against “bullying,” ABVP supporters argue that the organisation continues to enjoy strong grassroots backing across DU colleges.
With just days to go before voting, Monday’s clash may shape narratives around victimhood, solidarity, and strength, influencing how students cast their votes.
