In a move that could reshape the future of learning in India, the Ministry of Education has announced plans to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) education from Class 3 onwards, starting with the 2026–27 academic session.
The initiative is a major step towards preparing students and teachers for a tech-driven future and ensuring that India’s young learners are equipped with the skills needed to thrive in the digital economy.
Building the Foundation Early
According to officials, a comprehensive framework is already being developed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to integrate learning across all grades.
“We need to move fast so that students and teachers are properly aligned with this technology over the next two to three years. The challenge will be to reach out to over one crore teachers across the country and orient them in imparting AI-related education,” said Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of School Education, as reported by PTI.
He added that the CBSE is leading the creation of this framework to ensure consistency and quality across schools.
Pilot Projects and Teacher Training
To support this large-scale rollout, a pilot project is already underway to train teachers in using tools for lesson planning and classroom management.
“Our objective is to prepare both the learner and the teacher for the digital economy,” Kumar explained.
Currently, more than 18,000 CBSE-affiliated schools offer it as a skill subject from Class 6 onwards through a 15-hour introductory module. It is also available as an optional subject for students in Classes 9 to 12.
Expanding its learning to younger grades marks a significant transformation — one that ensures digital literacy and computational thinking begin early in a child’s education journey.
Bridging Education and Employment
The announcement came during the release of a NITI Aayog report on Artificial Intelligence and jobs. The report highlighted how Artificial Intelligence will reshape employment trends — estimating that while nearly two million traditional jobs could be displaced, around eight million new opportunities may emerge with the right ecosystem.
The report called for greater collaboration between the India AI Talent Mission and the India AI Mission, alongside partnerships among academia, government, and industry to create a supportive environment.
Strong compute infrastructure, accessible data, and oriented teacher training were identified as key enablers to help India nurture the next generation of innovators and professionals.

Experts believe that integrating AI education at the school level will have a transformative impact — not just on students, but on India’s position in the global landscape.
Early exposure to concepts can spark curiosity, problem-solving skills, and ethical understanding of emerging technologies.
