The Delhi High Court has taken a strong stance against the Delhi Public School, Dwarka, for publicly shaming 31 students whose parents fell behind on fee payments. The court described this behavior as a form of mental harassment that can seriously affect the psychological well-being of children.

Initially, DPS Dwarka had removed these 31 students from its rolls due to unpaid fees. However, the school later informed the court that it had reversed its decision and allowed the students to return.
While the court acknowledged that the situation had become less severe since the students were reinstated, it still expressed serious concerns about the school’s actions.
Criticizing the school’s approach, the bench stated, “Public shaming or intimidation of a student due to financial issues, especially through coercive measures, not only amounts to mental harassment but also damages a child’s psychological health and self-esteem.”
The court also condemned the use of bouncers to prevent students from entering the school grounds, arguing that “it creates an atmosphere of fear, humiliation, and exclusion that goes against the very principles of education.”
While the court recognized that schools have the right to collect fees, it emphasized that they should not operate like businesses.
The court reminded everyone that schools are not merely profit-driven entities. Their primary mission is to educate and instill values, not just to make money.
At the same time, the court made it clear that parents also have responsibilities. “It must be stressed that the parents involved are required to comply with the court’s orders regarding the payment of necessary fees to the school.”
The High Court directed that its previous ruling from May 16, 2025, concerning fee payments, must be adhered to.
