CPI(M) MP Seeks Probe After Kerala Students Claim Assault in Delhi

By Madhav Kandhari: On Friday, CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas wrote a letter to Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, alleging that two students from Kerala were brutally assaulted by police personnel and locals near the Red Fort. According to the complaint, the students were coerced to speak in Hindi and targeted for wearing the traditional Kerala attire called mundu (lungi).

The incident reportedly took place on the evening of September 24. Aswanth L.T., a first-year
student from Kerala, and his friend Sudhin K., a student of Zakir Husain Delhi College (Delhi
University), were accosted by a group of miscreants who accused them of theft.
The students said that when they approached a nearby Delhi Police constable for help, “instead
of extending protection, he slapped us multiple times.” They further alleged that police dragged
them and beat them with lathis.

Mr. Sudhin said that both of them were then taken to a police post near the Red Fort. “An officer
removed our lungi and started kicking us on our face and private parts,” he alleged. “A
policeman kicked my friend saying, ‘Talk in Hindi.’”
In his letter, Mr. Brittas urged the Delhi Police Commissioner to investigate the matter
impartially and take strict action against those responsible.
