Students across Delhi-NCR are set for an extended weekend as schools and government institutions will remain shut on November 25, which has been officially declared a public holiday in the capital.
The Delhi government has announced that the day will be observed as Guru Tegh Bahadur Shaheedi Diwas, marking the 350th martyrdom anniversary of the revered Sikh Guru. His sacrifice in standing up for freedom of faith continues to be remembered as one of India’s strongest symbols of courage and compassion.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, in a post on X, shared that the holiday honours Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib’s “enduring message of courage, compassion and the right to practice one’s faith.” Following the notification, all Delhi schools, government offices and public institutions will remain shut on Tuesday.
Updates for Noida and Ghaziabad
The Uttar Pradesh government has also revised its holiday schedule. Initially marked for November 24, the Shaheedi Diwas observance has now been shifted to November 25 for 2025, aligning with Delhi’s announcement.
Schools in Noida and Ghaziabad are expected to release formal closure notices shortly, and most educational institutions across NCR are likely to remain closed as well. This includes schools and colleges in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and adjoining regions, creating a near-uniform holiday across the capital belt.
Northern states including Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh are also expected to observe the day with school closures and official ceremonies.

What Will Be Open and Closed in Delhi on November 25
Government Offices
All Delhi government departments and public-sector offices will remain closed under the official order.
Schools & Colleges
Both government and many private schools will remain shut for the day. Colleges may issue institute-level notices but are widely expected to follow the holiday.
Public Transport
Metro services, buses, autos and taxis will operate as usual. No service disruptions or route changes have been announced.
Hospitals & Healthcare
Emergency and essential medical services will stay fully operational. Government hospitals will continue normal functioning in critical departments.
Banks
Banks will remain open as November 25 is not listed as a regional holiday in the RBI calendar.
What This Means for Students
For students across Delhi-NCR, this holiday offers a brief mid-week pause — especially helpful during ongoing exam seasons for many schools. With the break falling right after Sunday, learners effectively get two consecutive days off, giving them more time to rest, revise or spend time with family.
The announcement of the holiday has also prompted several schools in Delhi-NCR to adjust their academic schedules. Many institutions that had unit tests, practicals or project submissions planned for November 25 are now expected to reschedule them to later dates. School authorities have begun sending internal circulars on WhatsApp groups and parent portals, ensuring that students and parents stay informed without confusion.
For teachers, the unexpected closure offers a brief window to reset lesson plans, especially for senior classes facing board examinations in early 2026. While most teachers welcomed the break, some schools have indicated that any previously assigned homework or online submissions will continue as scheduled. Parents across Delhi and Noida have also acknowledged the holiday positively, noting that it provides students a needed breather from the tightly packed academic calendar.
Meanwhile, the significance of Guru Tegh Bahadur Shaheedi Diwas remains at the heart of the observance. Widely known as the Hind di Chadar (Protector of India), Guru Tegh Bahadur sacrificed his life to defend the religious rights of the people of Kashmir, making his martyrdom an enduring symbol of interfaith harmony and moral courage. Special programmes, kirtans and remembrance gatherings will be held in Gurudwaras across Delhi and neighbouring states, with several Sikh organisations planning community meals (langars) and awareness events to educate young citizens about the Guru’s legacy.
The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) is expected to organise a major commemorative programme at Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib in Chandni Chowk — the historic site connected to the Guru’s martyrdom. Large crowds are anticipated, especially since this year marks the 350th Shaheedi Diwas, a milestone of deep emotional and cultural significance.
Traffic authorities may issue advisories for routes around central Delhi, particularly in areas surrounding major Gurudwaras. While the Delhi Police has confirmed full-force deployment for crowd management, no disruptions have been announced so far. Commuters using public transport, including the Metro, are expected to face minimal impact.
Across NCR, the mood is a blend of solemn remembrance and logistical preparation. In Noida and Ghaziabad, school managements are coordinating with district authorities to align with the revised holiday notification from the Uttar Pradesh government. Many private schools have already informed parents that regular classes will resume from Wednesday.
The extended weekend is also expected to give a slight push to retail, entertainment and dining sectors, with families likely to step out for short outings or festive gatherings after paying tributes at local Gurudwaras. Despite this, officials have urged citizens to remain mindful of the day’s significance and participate respectfully in remembrance events.
