The Delhi University 2025-26 academic calendar had finally been unveiled, bringing much-needed clarity and structure to students, faculty members, and academic planners alike. This detailed calendar acts as a roadmap, outlining essential academic events including the start and end dates of semesters, examination periods, seasonal breaks, and other crucial academic activities across undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
One of the most notable aspects of this year’s calendar is the introduction of an “exit option” for students enrolled in undergraduate courses. This move is part of DU’s broader efforts to align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes flexibility, student choice, and multidisciplinary education. The new exit provision will allow students who complete three years of study to leave with a recognized qualification, rather than continuing into the fourth year of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP). This change is especially relevant for students who may wish to enter the workforce early, pursue other academic interests, or manage financial or personal constraints.
In addition to the academic schedule, the calendar also reflects the university’s evolving academic structure, including adjustments in semester timelines and vacation durations to better accommodate both educational rigor and student well-being. By clearly laying out semester start dates, breaks like the autumn, winter, and summer vacations, and exam schedules, DU aims to ensure that students and faculty can plan ahead with confidence.
This calendar is not just a list of dates—it’s a reflection of DU’s commitment to adapting to new educational paradigms, making student success and flexibility a priority in a rapidly changing academic environment.
When Do Classes Begin according to Delhi University 2025–26 academic calendar ?

According to the Delhi University 2025–26 academic calendar, odd semesters (1, 3, 5, and 7) for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs will commence on August 1, 2025. These classes will continue until the autumn break, which is scheduled from October 19 to October 26.
Classes will resume on October 27, and continue until November 27, when students will begin their preparation leave along with practical examinations. The odd semester theory exams are set to start from December 10, giving students just under two weeks for self-study and revision.
Winter and Summer Breaks
Once the theory exams conclude, winter break will be observed from December 28, 2025, to January 1, 2026. Students are expected to return refreshed for the even semesters (2, 4, 6, and 8), which will begin on January 2, 2026.
Midway through the semester, students will receive a midterm break from March 1 to March 8, with classes resuming on March 9. The even semester classes will end on April 30, 2026, giving way to theory exams that begin on May 16.
Finally, Delhi University 2025–26 academic calendar year will conclude with a summer vacation, scheduled from June 1 to July 20, 2026.
Extension of Summer Break for 2024–25
Interestingly, DU has also made adjustments to the current academic year (2024–2025). In an effort to seamlessly transition into the 2025–2026 session, the summer break has been extended for this year as well. Initially scheduled to end on July 20, 2025, the new summer break dates are now July 20–31, 2025.
A university notice explained the decision, stating:
“The summer vacation notified in the existing Academic Calendars for the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programs for the academic session 2024-25 has been extended… in order to give effect to the above-mentioned Academic Calendar for the Academic Session 2025-26.”
This provides a breather for students and faculty, ensuring a smoother shift into the next academic session.
Exit Option Introduced for 3-Year Students
In a significant development, Delhi University 2025–26 academic calendar has introduced an “exit option” for students pursuing the Four-Year Undergraduate Program (FYUP). This new move is especially relevant for those who may wish to conclude their studies at the end of three years, rather than completing the full four-year program.
This first-of-its-kind provision comes as DU students prepare to enter the final year of the new degree structure for the first time since NEP 2020 was implemented. The university is giving students the flexibility to make academic choices that align with their career plans, financial situations, or personal goals.
Last month, the university’s Academic Council approved the syllabus for the seventh and eighth semesters, thereby finalizing the curriculum for the fourth year of FYUP.
What This Means for Students
Delhi University 2025–26 academic calendar brings a sense of structure and predictability, which is vital for academic planning. The inclusion of longer breaks, a revised timeline, and greater flexibility through the exit option are positive steps toward student-centric education.
The university’s efforts to align with NEP 2020 are clearly visible, and the calendar reflects a growing commitment to balance academic rigor with mental well-being, flexibility, and future-readiness.
