Delhi University Launches Sikh Martyrdom and Radio Jockey Courses in New Academic Reforms

Delhi University has announced a series of academic reforms aimed at enriching both intellectual and practical learning for its students. As the University gears up for the undergraduate session beginning on August 1, it has introduced a new General Elective course on Sikh martyrdom and several skill-based programmes, including radio jockeying, vacuum technology, eco-printing on textiles, and medical diagnostics.

New Course on Sikh Martyrdom Brings Regional History to the Fore

One of the most significant additions is a course titled Sikh Martyrdom in Indian History (c. 1500–1765). Developed by the Centre for Independence and Partition Studies, the course aims to deepen students’ understanding of key events in Sikh history during the Mughal period. Topics include the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev and Guru Tegh Bahadur, the leadership of Guru Gobind Singh, and the resistance movements led by Sikh warriors.

Open to undergraduate students from all streams, the four-credit course will be delivered through a mix of classroom lectures, field visits, and analysis of documentary material. Vice Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh, who led the discussions at the Academic Council meeting, said the course reflects the University’s commitment to including region-specific histories in the national academic discourse.

Skill-Based Courses to Boost Applied Learning

Delhi University has also approved several new skill enhancement courses to meet the demands of today’s job market. Among them is a course in radio jockeying designed for students interested in voice-based media. This course will provide training in voice modulation, live show hosting, and studio handling, offering students a chance to develop practical expertise in broadcasting.

Other approved skill-based courses include programmes in vacuum technology, eco-printing on textiles, and medical diagnostics. These additions are part of the University’s broader strategy to equip students with valuable skills alongside their academic studies.

Expansion of Undergraduate Programme and Student Support

Looking ahead, Delhi University plans to introduce a fourth year of undergraduate education starting from the 2025–26 academic session. Students will have the flexibility to choose a dissertation, an academic project, or an entrepreneurship-based track in this additional year. Importantly, the University has decided that supervision of these projects will not be limited to PhD holders, giving more faculty members the opportunity to mentor students.

In another student-focused measure, the University has granted a two-year extension to students admitted during the 2016–17 academic session. This extension will allow them to complete their degrees, addressing challenges created by the transition from the Choice Based Credit System to the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework.

A Step Towards Flexible and Modern Education

These latest reforms highlight Delhi University’s efforts to create a flexible, inclusive, and applied learning environment. By blending the study of India’s rich regional histories with practical skill development, the University is working to provide students with a well-rounded educational experience that prepares them for both academic and professional success.
