Heatwave Alert: 5 States Enforce Urgent School Time Shift

HEATWAVE ALERT

Due to escalating weather patterns, Heatwave Alert has prompted an immediate reaction from different state governments throughout India, forcing them to adjust school timings to safeguard students. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared an orange alert for eight states and a yellow alert for many others, alerting the country to hazardous heatwave-like conditions engulfing the country. In view of this, educational authorities in states such as Delhi, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Telangana have either changed school timings or announced premature summer breaks.

Precautionary School Timing Adjustments

The IMD’s Heatwave Alert has prompted the authorities to undertake preventive measures promptly. Official notifications have been released by district administrations in a few states to prevent school-going children from exposure to intense heat. The emphasis is on reducing outdoor activity, changing school timings to less hot times of the day, and ensuring proper hydration and ventilation at schools.

Implementation of Heatwave Precautions State-wise

Madhya Pradesh:
The Madhya Pradesh School Education Department has directed schools in Bhopal and surrounding districts to start classes only after noon for students up to Class 8. The state emphasized the need to shield young students from the harsh midday sun.

Odisha:
From April 2, schools in Odisha started running morning shifts, beginning early to escape the hottest part of the day. Also, Anganwadi centres have changed their timings, now operating between 7 am to 9 am.

Maharashtra:
On March 28, the Maharashtra Education Department ordered all schools—regardless of medium or management—to operate between 7 am and 11:15 am. Schools have also been instructed to provide working fans in classrooms, provide cold drinking water, and encourage the consumption of seasonal fruits and vegetables to make children cool and healthy.

Telangana:
Stepping into a bolder measure following the Heatwave Alert, Telangana has announced summer holidays from April 24 to June 11. This is likely to shield students from extended exposure to extreme heat.

Delhi:
The national capital has been proactive. Not only have school hours been modified, but schools are also offering students traditional hydrating beverages such as aam panna, buttermilk, lemonade, and wood apple juices. Outdoor activities have been restricted to prior to 10 am, and schools have reduced midday assemblies and sports activities.

Heatwave Alert: What are schools doing to address health risks?

With Heatwave Alert declared in several areas, the Delhi Directorate of Education (DoE) issued a comprehensive advisory on March 27, specifying key measures for all government as well as private schools. The advisory alerted that temperatures during the day above 40°C have grave health implications for children and youths.

Preventive actions enumerated are:

  • Keeping assemblies in the afternoons off
  • Providing sufficient drinking water
  • Permitting regular water breaks
  • Encouraging the wearing of head protection like caps or scarves
  • Ensuring proper fan ventilation in class rooms
  • Reporting heatstroke or heat exhaustion symptoms to nearby health centers

Parents and Schools Called Upon to Be Alert

Officials in these states are encouraging parents and school officials to be cautious throughout this stretch of severe weather. Constant checking of weather reports and strict adherence to state-mandated school time orders are being emphasized as paramount to protecting students.

As the heatwave season gets more severe, IMD is constantly revising its warnings, and more districts will also likely follow them with similar revisions to school timings. Children, particularly those in primary school, are being put first because they are especially susceptible to heat illness.

The Heatwave Alert across the country has further highlighted the importance of educational institutions adjusting and keeping the health and well-being of students at priority. Through forethoughtful school schedule adjustments, increased hydration strategies, and prophylactic notices, states are making efforts to reduce heat-related hazards during this tumultuous climatic period.
