IIM Mumbai and Coal India Launch Second Executive PG Program in Logistics and Digital Transformation
The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai has once again partnered with Coal India Limited (CIL) to launch the second edition of its Executive Post Graduate Program (PGPEx) in Logistics and Operations Excellence through Digitisation. This one-year specialised course is designed to empower mid- and senior-level executives at CIL with cutting-edge skills in logistics, supply chain management, and digital transformation.
Speaking about the renewed collaboration, Professor Manoj K Tiwari, Director of IIM Mumbai, shared that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) had been extended to train the next cohort of executives. “We’ve signed the agreement for the second batch of this highly impactful program. The goal is to build future-ready talent that can lead digital transformation efforts and improve operational efficiency across Coal India’s ecosystem,” he said.
Blended Learning Format for Working Professionals
The program is thoughtfully designed to suit the schedules of working professionals. It adopts a blended learning format, with 60% of the sessions conducted online and 40% held through in-person classes. The on-campus component will take place at IIM Mumbai’s satellite centre in Angul, Odisha, giving participants access to state-of-the-art facilities and an immersive learning experience.
The upcoming batch, set to begin in September 2025, will enrol 40 selected executives from Coal India and its subsidiaries. The curriculum has been carefully crafted to offer both conceptual understanding and practical tools, enabling participants to address real-world challenges in logistics and operations.
What the Program Offers
At its core, the PGPEx program is focused on three high-impact areas:
- Logistics Management: Understanding and managing complex logistics systems in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
- Supply Chain Optimisation: Leveraging technology and process innovation to streamline supply chains for improved agility and resilience.
- Digital Transformation: Equipping leaders with the mindset and skill set needed to drive digital change across large-scale operations.
The program aims to strengthen strategic leadership, help executives adapt to technological disruption, and foster a culture of innovation within Coal India. This aligns with the growing demand for professionals who can connect operational insights with enterprise-wide digital goals.
Vision for Expansion: A New Satellite Campus Near Mumbai
In addition to this program, IIM Mumbai has also revealed ambitious plans to establish a new satellite campus in or around Mumbai. The proposal, which has been submitted to the Maharashtra Government, aligns with the state’s “Viksit Maharashtra 2047” vision—an initiative aimed at positioning Maharashtra as a leader in finance, policy, technology, and education.
This proposed campus will host a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary education. Disciplines expected to be offered include:
- Economics
- Accounting and Finance
- Technology and Data Science
- Law and Regulation
By combining academic excellence with future-oriented pedagogy, IIM Mumbai seeks to support the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020—particularly its call for innovation, flexibility, and holistic learning in higher education.
A Step Towards Building Future-Ready India Inc.
Both initiatives—the renewal of the executive program with Coal India and the vision for a new Mumbai campus—underline IIM Mumbai’s commitment to creating future-ready professionals and strengthening India’s human capital for the decades ahead.
Whether it’s upskilling public sector leaders or nurturing the next generation of economists, data scientists, and policy experts, IIM Mumbai is actively contributing to India’s transformation journey through education and collaboration. By fostering stronger industry-academia linkages and promoting interdisciplinary thinking, the institute is helping build a more adaptive, innovative, and resilient economic ecosystem where knowledge flows into sustained societal impact.
