IIT Madras is set to bring a transformative educational opportunity to rural Telangana as it begins mentoring students from two government schools in Sircilla through an eight-week online learning programme. Launching this August, the initiative is part of the institute’s School Connect Programme and aims to introduce high school students to advanced topics such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), data science, law, and more.
This marks a major step in bridging the gap between rural schools and premier academic institutions, giving students from under-resourced regions direct access to quality education delivered by India’s top technical institute.

Exposure to Future-Ready Subjects
Students from Government High School, Sircilla and Zilla Parishad Girls High School, Sircilla will be part of this unique initiative, designed by the Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE) at IIT Madras. The course content is rich and diverse, covering not only technology and science but also environmental studies, humanities, and even creative modules like ‘Maths Unplugged’ and ‘Fun with Maths and Computer’.
Each week, students will go through video lectures, followed by live interactive sessions with IIT professors every Saturday. This blended learning model ensures a balance between self-paced study and real-time engagement.
A Classroom in Sircilla, A Window to the IIT World
Dr Chakinala Srinivas, headmaster of Government High School, Sircilla, shared how the opportunity came about.
“We applied to the School Connect Programme and were thrilled to receive confirmation. This morning, I announced it during the school assembly, and the students were thrilled,” he said.
Dr Srinivas also emphasized the school’s readiness to support the programme.
“We have smart classrooms with televisions, projectors, and computer facilities to make this learning experience immersive and meaningful,” he added.
Certification and Career Awareness
Students who complete the eight-week programme will receive certificates from IIT Madras, giving them recognition that can boost their academic and personal confidence. This initiative is expected to help students make more informed choices about future career paths by exposing them to fields they may not otherwise encounter in their regular curriculum.
“When students are introduced to these subjects early, it helps them understand what options they have beyond traditional streams,” Dr Srinivas noted.
Breaking Barriers with Technology and Outreach
By offering such a programme to rural schools, IIT Madras is helping to narrow the gap between elite institutions and public schools in small towns. It not only democratizes access to high-quality education but also introduces young learners to disciplines like engineering biological systems, electronic systems, aerospace, and architecture, which they might not have explored otherwise.
This initiative is not just about academic learning — it’s about inspiration, confidence, and equal opportunity. For many of these students, learning from IIT faculty, even virtually, is a rare and empowering experience.
A Model for Inclusive Education
The Sircilla programme could serve as a model for similar collaborations across the country. With the right infrastructure and commitment, other rural and government schools could benefit from such outreach efforts, turning digital learning into a powerful tool for social and educational equity.
As August approaches, the students in Sircilla are gearing up to begin a learning journey that could shape their futures in unexpected and exciting ways — all thanks to the vision and outreach of IIT Madras.
