IIT MADRAS Rolls Out Online Diploma in Process Safety

IIT MADRAS has announced a revolutionary Postgraduate Diploma program in Process Safety to provide working professionals with the knowledge to curb industrial accidents across manufacturing, mining, energy, and allied industries. Launched by the institute’s Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE), the program is the country’s first-ever and will be offered fully through online mode so that working professionals can access and pursue it comfortably.

Aimed at working professionals with a BE/BTech in Chemical, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Petroleum Engineering or an MSc in Chemistry and two years of work experience, the programme is aimed at filling the gap between classroom learning and industry safety requirements. The application deadline is May 31, 2025, and the entrance exam will be held on July 13, 2025.

The diploma programme follows a trimester academic schedule, with courses between September to December, January to April, and May to August. One can take up to three courses per term to ensure a reasonable workload without any compromise on the academic level. The flexible approach is designed so that learners may balance their working responsibilities with skilling in process safety.

IIT MADRAS’ new diploma arrives in answer to an increasing concern—how can India’s core industries substantially minimize workplace accidents and instill a culture of safety?

As per Professor Rajagopalan Srinivasan, course coordinator of the Postgraduate Diploma in Process Safety, the requirement for this course is immediate and supported by startling statistics. “A 2024 IndustriALL Global Union report identified a minimum of 240 workplace accidents in India’s manufacturing, mining, and energy industries, resulting in more than 400 fatalities and over 850 serious injuries. This is indicative of a critical skills and safety protocol gap,” he said.

He also said that the new diploma would enable professionals to gain a deeper insight into the latest safety practices and standards. “The programme will not just improve career prospects but also help create safer, more resilient work environments,” Srinivasan said. The curriculum content is designed to keep pace with global safety standards and to educate professionals in anticipating, preventing, and managing industrial risks.

IIT MADRAS is working with industry professionals to make the programme relevant and applicable in real-world environments. It will address fundamental safety subjects such as hazard identification, risk assessment, emergency response planning, and safe system design. The aim is to develop a pipeline of trained safety leaders who can address the changing needs of India’s industrial sector.

The process of applying is easy and available through the official portal code.iitm.ac.in/processsafety. Learners will, upon admission, be provided with live online lectures, recorded sessions, case study-based exams, and access to top academics and industry experts.

IIT MADRAS, which was set up in 1959, has been a leader in India in both technical education and research for decades. With 18 departments and many interdisciplinary research centers, it remains one of the top engineering institutes in the country. With its CODE programme, the institute has been increasing its reach with programmes intended to meet actual industrial and societal demands.

The launch of this process safety diploma aligns with IIT MADRAS’ commitment to industry-relevant education and workplace innovation. As sectors like manufacturing and energy continue to evolve rapidly, the demand for safety-trained professionals has never been higher.

Through launching this course, IIT MADRAS not only fills an urgent gap within India’s industrial sector but also creates a new standard for scholarly involvement in workplace safety. Through its thorough curriculum, industry-specific emphasis, and adaptive delivery, the Postgraduate Diploma in Process Safety is likely to become a life-changing programme for professionals all over India.
