IIT Madras Launches Bold New BS in Chemical Engineering

IIT Madras Zanzibar launches a BS in Chemical Process Engineering for global students, blending lab skills, data science, and sustainability.

In a move set to bolster international STEM education, IIT Madras Zanzibar, the first overseas campus of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, has launched a brand-new four-year undergraduate program in Chemical Process Engineering. The Bachelor of Science (BS) degree is open to students of all nationalities, including those from India, and marks a significant step in the institute’s mission to offer globally relevant, high-quality education outside India.

The new course combines the core principles of chemical engineering with contemporary topics such as data science, sustainability, and energy systems. According to the institute, the curriculum is designed not only to deliver academic depth but also to ensure practical application through hands-on laboratory work, industry-relevant electives, and project-based learning.

Built for the Future of Engineering

“This is an exciting milestone,” said Prof. Preeti Aghalayam, Director-in-Charge of IIT Madras Zanzibar and herself a chemical engineer. “It gives me immense pleasure to introduce this program in Zanzibar. We believe it’s a big leap forward for our international campus, and for the students who choose to pursue their engineering dreams here.”

What makes this BS program particularly compelling is its focus on preparing students for global careers. The course includes a capstone project designed in collaboration with local industries, providing real-world experience and exposure to problem-solving in a professional context. Students will graduate with a strong foundation in core engineering skills, as well as knowledge tailored for the 21st-century challenges of energy, environment, and innovation.
