Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech), located in Chicago, is the first American university to get approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) for establishing a degree-awarding campus in India. The new Illinois Tech campus in Mumbai will offer comprehensive undergraduate and postgraduate programs such as business, engineering, and computer science, starting from the 2026 fall semester.

India based students will be able to conveniently access career fast tracking opportunities without the necessity to relocate overseas, while also enjoying cross-campus study and global classroom experiences. Illinois Tech’s business programs also remain competitively ranked; with his master’s in management ranked 15th, marketing 24th, and finance 26th according to the TFE Times (2025).
As of the 2025 US News and World Report rankings, Illinois Tech’s undergraduate and graduate computer science programs are also within the top 100. According to Opportunity Insights (2024), Illinois Tech is ranked 2nd in the private market for upward mobility among highly selective private colleges.
There is increasing domestic demand for quality higher education, combined with India’s National Education Policy 2020 which emphasized global partnerships, undergird the decision to expand there. The statement goes on to explain how Illinois Tech’s program helps achieve these objectives by saying it caters to students by providing an internationally acclaimed education within India.
The reasoning for the expansion into India is based on a recognition of the country’s growing demographic. There is a sizeable population of international students with over a quarter of the student population at the Illinois Tech’s Chicago campuses being international. This focus will also be supported by the Mumbai campus which will allow students from multiple other regions to undergo an engaging educational journey aimed at leadership training in a globalized economy.
