Jamia Millia Islamia Launches Center of Excellence for Vocational Skill Development

In a significant move towards industry-focused education, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) launched a new Center of Excellence under the umbrella of the University Polytechnic for Professional Skill Development on April 8, 2025. The move reflects the university’s efforts to equip students with skills that match present and future industry needs.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Mazhar Asif, formally inaugurated the center in a ceremony where prominent dignitaries were present, including Mr. Sundresan Narayanan, Managing Director of Carrier Air-conditioning Ltd.; Prof. Mini Shaji Thomas, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology; and Prof. Mohammad Mahtab Alam Rizvi, Registrar of the university.

Emphasis on Future-Proof Technical Education

The newly opened center is set to fill the gap between theoretical education and hands-on skills so that students are equipped to handle the challenges of a changing workforce. Intended to provide vocational and skill-oriented courses, the center will focus on project-based learning, hands-on training, and industry experience.

Prof. Mazhar Asif, speaking to the audience, emphasized the need to prepare students with future-oriented skills to remain competitive in a technologically driven employment market. “This center will be instrumental in developing the next generation of skilled professionals who are not only academically qualified but also practically equipped to address the needs of different sectors,” he added.

Collaboration with Industry Experts

One of the key aspects of the new center is its partnership with industry leaders and corporate partners. Through the inclusion of professionals from companies such as Carrier Air-conditioning Ltd., the center will provide students with real-world experience, internship opportunities, and industry-approved training modules. These initiatives are likely to improve employability and foster innovation in technical disciplines.

According to Mr. Sundresan Narayanan, industry collaboration is essential for ensuring students receive training that is relevant, current, and practical. “We’re proud to support Jamia Millia Islamia’s vision of nurturing talent through vocational education. Industry-academia partnerships like these are the future of workforce development,” he said.

Admission Process for 2025 in Full Swing

Along with opening the new center, the university is also actively on the process of admissions for the 2025 academic year. The deadline date for online application is April 10, 2025, for a plethora of undergraduate as well as postgraduate courses including popular ones like BTech and BArch.

For this cycle, Common University Entrance Test (CUET) marks will be utilized for admission to 25 various programs, out of which nine are undergraduate, five postgraduate, eight diploma, and three advanced diploma courses. This shift is made with the aim of simplifying the process of admissions and merit-based choice.

Increased Access Through Regional Test Centers

For easy accessibility and avoiding the necessity for lengthy travel, Jamia has opened its entrance test centers in nine cities across India. Through this initiative, students from varied areas can sit for exams in their local vicinity and apply locally, promoting wider access and greater participation in admissions.

New Courses to Promote Academic Innovation

In an effort to stay abreast of evolving educational needs, Jamia has added 14 new courses this year. These include self-financed and evening programs in computer science, design, fine arts, and other certificate-level courses. Several of these courses are designed to accommodate working professionals or students who want flexible learning opportunities while acquiring practical skills.

The university highlighted that the courses were specially designed in collaboration with industry and academic leaders so that they remain relevant to ongoing and future demands. These courses will play a major role in the academic innovation and skill creation mission established by the university.

Incentives for International Applicants

As part of its international outreach policy, Jamia has changed its fee plan for foreign and non-resident students, specifically for diploma courses. It has also lowered the application fee for SAARC applicants, making it simpler and less expensive for global students to contemplate Jamia as a place of quality education.

In keeping with its move towards internationalization, PhD applicants from abroad would now be able to appear for entrance interviews through online. Moreover, two seats in BDS have been kept exclusively reserved only for foreign nationals and thus denote the university’s efforts to be more global in its inclusiveness.

Jamia’s Vision Ahead

With the opening of its new Center of Excellence, a reorganized admissions process, and a new range of courses, Jamia Millia Islamia is showing its commitment to academic excellence, practical skill-building, and global openness. These forward-thinking steps guarantee that students not only earn degrees but also gain the skills necessary to succeed in an ever-more dynamic and competitive world.
