“JMI University Takes Strong Action Against Violent Protesters During Midterms

Since the night of February 10, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University took strong action against several students who were involved in a protest at the school’s academic building on campus. Police were summoned to assist in restoring peace after the protesting students were forced off the school and carried out of the protest site.

Protest or violation of law?

The demonstration in JMI, which spanned two days, became more violent, destroying university property and disrupting normal academic activities. Besides wrecking property, the protesting students also prevented other students from accessing the central library during the midterm exams of the university, according to the statement. The demonstrations took a worse turn when the protesters vandalized the university property, including the central canteen, and smashed the gate of the security advisor’s office.

A notice criticizing the protesting students’ actions was uploaded on X by the administration office of JMI. As per the office, the students organized illegal protests that disrupted the other students inside the campus and involved themselves with significant academic proceedings.

“Vandalism on the higher end” was what the university described that the demonstrators were committing. They were breaking things, removing paint from walls, and otherwise attempting to create havoc and chaos that would have a seriously debilitating effect on normal schoolwork. Also, the cohort of students were “found carrying objectionable contraband items,” which added to their breach of university rules. As defined by the institution, these actions constituted disciplinary offenses.

What JMI Adminstration Says?

The institution added, “Despite the University administration has extended open offer to sit and discuss their demands in the committee, they declined to listen and communicate to the administration including supervisor, head, and Dean.”

“As a precautionary measure, the students were thrown out of the campus today morning after being arrested from the protest area by the police squad and the university administration. The institution management also added that the police had been summoned to maintain law and order.”.

To bring back normalcy, the institution has taken firm action, evicting the protesting students and requesting police intervention. JMI wishes to ensure that classes are not disrupted when midterm examinations are initiated.
