London’s Imperial College has partnered with Science Gallery Bengaluru (SGB) to co-develop open research facilities, strengthen innovation ties between the United Kingdom and India, and launch global fellowship programs. The announcement was made by Imperial President Hugh Brady during his visit to India as part of the UK delegation led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, marking the British leader’s first official visit to the country.

A New Chapter in UK-India Collaboration
According to Mr. Brady, this partnership will focus on co-developing new facilities, launching a joint fellowship program, and enhancing public engagement in science and education. He emphasized that the collaboration will train the innovators of tomorrow and nurture the next generation of global thinkers.
The agreement builds on Imperial’s existing presence in India through its Imperial Global India hub, established in Bengaluru earlier this year. This hub serves as a liaison office to strengthen collaborations between Imperial and Indian academic and research institutions. It is Imperial’s fourth global hub after Singapore, San Francisco, and Accra.
Co-Developing Open Research Facilities
The partnership aims to expand the international impact of Science Gallery Bengaluru’s Public Lab Complex. Together, Imperial College London and SGB will design a new portfolio of initiatives focused on innovation challenges, technology-driven discovery, and public science engagement.
Mr. Brady said that Imperial’s expertise in innovation and incubation will help create a unique laboratory and convening space at SGB, enabling researchers and innovators from both nations to collaborate on addressing global challenges.
He described this partnership as a “launchpad for UK-India innovation,” highlighting how the two institutions will work together to translate ideas into real-world impact.
London’s Role in Strengthening Ties
In an official statement, Imperial College London noted that its participation in Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit underscores the university’s critical role in strengthening UK-India partnerships. The collaboration aligns with both countries’ shared vision of advancing research, education, and sustainable innovation.
By uniting expertise across continents, Imperial aims to deepen research cooperation, expand talent exchange programs, and build bridges that empower the next generation of scientists, leaders, and changemakers.
Science Gallery Bengaluru’s Perspective
Jahnavi Phalkey, Founding Director of Science Gallery Bengaluru, expressed her enthusiasm about the collaboration. She said the partnership represents an important milestone in creating shared spaces for inquiry, creativity, and learning.
“We are delighted to be partnering with Imperial College London to co-develop our Public Lab Complex. This is an important step in building shared spaces where curiosity and creativity thrive across borders,” she said.
Ms. Phalkey added that Science Gallery Bengaluru, a not-for-profit public institution, focuses on research-based engagement with young adults. It operates at the intersection of science, art, design, and social studies, encouraging dialogue between disciplines.
Driving Locally Rooted and Globally Relevant Innovation
The collaboration between London’s Imperial College and Science Gallery Bengaluru aims to drive locally rooted yet globally relevant innovation. Both institutions seek to foster community-engaged science that encourages diverse perspectives, interdisciplinary thinking, and creative experimentation.
This initiative will not only boost joint research and fellowships but also strengthen the UK-India education and innovation ecosystem—helping both nations stay at the forefront of global discovery.
As Mr. Brady noted, “By joining forces, we will train innovators of the future and cultivate the next generation of talent who can tackle the world’s biggest challenges.” This might lead to a superb positive revolution.
Conclusively, London’s Imperial College has joined hands with Science Gallery Bengaluru to develop open research labs, launch fellowships, and strengthen UK-India innovation and education ties during Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s first India visit.
