Placement at IIM Kashipur recently became the subject of heated debate after a viral post on social media platform X stirred confusion and criticism. The post, made by Siddharth Gopi, Co-founder of TopHire.co, included a screenshot of an internal email from the institute, alleging that IIM Kashipur had asked unplaced students to formally opt out of the placement process. The post further claimed that this step was taken to artificially portray a 100 percent placement record.
In light of growing online backlash, IIM Kashipur issued an official clarification, stating that the email was part of a long-standing and transparent system meant to categorise students based on their job-seeking status. The institute emphasized that no student would be excluded from placement support and that the purpose of the communication was administrative, not strategic manipulation of data.

Email Intended for Accurate Classification, Not Elimination
According to IIM Kashipur, every year some students either choose to seek jobs outside the placement cell or decide not to participate in placements at all, often due to personal preferences, start-up plans, or offers from external sources. The email, sent by the Student Placement Committee, aimed to gather signed declarations from students in order to correctly identify and record their status.
“The email clearly states that those who are still unplaced will continue receiving full support from the institute,” said an official spokesperson. “It was not an attempt to sideline students, but to better understand who is actively participating in the placement process and who has chosen a different path.”
By classifying students accurately, the institute aims to provide targeted help to those still looking for jobs while ensuring others are not misrepresented in the data.
Following Indian Placement Reporting Standards (IPRS)
IIM Kashipur reiterated its commitment to transparency by pointing to its adherence to the Indian Placement Reporting Standards (IPRS). For the past two years, the institute has published placement reports that are audited by independent third parties. The IPRS guidelines are designed to ensure consistent, comparable, and accurate placement reporting across leading institutions.
As part of the IPRS framework, every student is required to submit a declaration form that reflects their current status—whether they are placed on campus, placed off campus, pursuing further studies, or exploring other career options. This formality ensures that students who are not part of the main placement drive are not mistakenly included in the “unplaced” category, which could distort the data presented to recruiters and stakeholders.
“The classification system is an important step for maintaining the integrity of placement data,” the statement explained. “It ensures that students are fairly represented and that future recruiters get a clear and honest view of the placement ecosystem at IIM Kashipur.”
Support for Unplaced Students Remains a Priority
Despite the misunderstanding, IIM Kashipur has stressed that supporting unplaced students remains one of its core priorities. The classification process is not an end to placement help but rather a step toward more focused support.
“This categorisation helps us channel our resources better,” the institute noted. “It allows our placement cell to work closely with students who genuinely need assistance, helping them connect with recruiters, improve interview performance, or explore alternative job markets.”
IIM Kashipur also emphasized that every student will continue to receive access to the institute’s placement resources, networking opportunities, and training sessions.
Over 180 Recruiters Participating in 2025 Placement Season
As part of its ongoing efforts, IIM Kashipur has invited over 180 companies to its campus for the 2025 placement season. These include firms from a wide range of sectors such as consulting, finance, marketing, IT, operations, and start-ups. The diversity in recruiter profiles is expected to offer more opportunities for students with different interests and specialisations.
The final audited placement report for this year will be published soon on the institute’s official website. This report will include detailed data verified under IPRS norms, offering full transparency into the outcomes of the placement season.
Conclusion: Commitment to Integrity and Student Welfare
Placement remains a defining element of a management student’s journey, and IIM Kashipur’s handling of the recent controversy shows its commitment to clarity, integrity, and student welfare. While a social media post sparked doubt and concern, the institute’s swift and detailed response has clarified its intent and practices.
Rather than manipulating data, IIM Kashipur is following a structured, transparent process that not only meets audit standards but also ensures that each student’s career path is recognised and respected. The institute has reaffirmed that no student will be left unsupported, regardless of how they choose to pursue their professional journey.
