According to the Railway Job Board (RRB) Group D Recruitment 2025, over 1.08 crore people have applied for the Group D position under notification CEN 08/2024. Interestingly, out of all the regions the RRB separated, Mumbai received the most applications (15,59,100, or 15.59 lakh).
The Indian Railways Group D hiring is offering a number of Level 1 positions across the Railways, such as Assistant Pointsman, Track Maintainer Grade-IV, and technical assistants in disciplines like electrical, mechanical, and signal and telecommunication.

The RRB had previously posted 32,438 positions for these Group D positions. The now-publicized high volume of applications, however, indicates that the selection process will be fiercely competitive given the huge disparity between the number of applications and available positions. Soon after the online registration period concludes, the RRB is expected to announce the exam dates for the Group D recruitment.

Patterns of applications highlight broader issues with the labor market. The sheer number of applications demonstrates the high demand for government jobs. However, it also highlights more serious problems with the overall labor market.
The National Statistical Office (NSO) released Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) data last year showing that urban unemployment dropped to a record low of 6.4% in the July-September 2024 quarter.
However, concerns about the quality and sustainability of work persist, especially among youth. The India Employment Report 2024 notes that while labor market indicators have improved, these improvements have taken place during periods of economic hardship, suggesting that employment quality remains a concern.
Every month, employment data will be made public. Additionally, the government has taken action to increase the frequency and transparency of employment data. The government had previously stated that the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) would start releasing India’s unemployment data on a monthly basis on May 15, 2025, replacing the previous quarterly releases. This action aims to provide more timely insights into the labor market and aid in the formulation of policies.
