Why Are BEOs Sending Notices Over Dead Teacher’s Pay For 13 Months?

“Until February 2025, the deceased teacher’s salary was still credited to their accounts,” the sources added, adding that shortly after Sabita Kumari took over as BEO in March, she wrote to higher authorities requesting that they make a decision on the matter.

Notices have been sent to the four block education officers (BEOs) who worked for the block during that time. For more than a year, a deceased Bihar government teacher kept taking money out of his paycheck.

The department began looking into this strange incident that happened in the Saharsa district of Bihar after block education officer (BEO) Sabita Kumari wrote to the district education officer (DEO) on March 13. The media only became aware of the issue on Tuesday.

The deceased, a contract teacher at Middle School Dumri under Mahishi block, was subsequently identified as a local resident named Ram Prasad Raushan On December 22, 2023, Telwa (Mahishi)The following day, Ajit Roy, the school’s headmaster at the time, notified the department of the death.

“The salary continued to be credited in the dead teacher’s accounts for 13 months, and you can’t say it was simply negligence; it was a blunder and it tells the real picture of the education department which has been making tall claims,” a department official told.

Although district education officer (DEO) Anil Kumar did not return calls, district program officer Sanjay Kumar stated that four BEOs had received show-cause notices in this regard over a 13-month period and that additional action would be taken once they provided their justifications.

Three of the four BEOs who received show-cause notices have already retired. While the then-DPO Rajneesh Kumar Jha, who was also holding the additional charge of BEO of Mahisi, received a notice and is currently posted as DPO in Saran, Satya Prasad Singh, Vidyanand Tiwari, and Sanjay Kumar have all already retired.
