UP schools are entering a new era of digital reform as the Uttar Pradesh government introduces mandatory online attendance for students and teachers. Starting July 1, 2025, attendance for Classes 9 to 12 will be recorded through a dedicated mobile app and online portal. This move replaces the traditional paper registers in around 30,000 schools affiliated with the UP Board of Secondary Education.
The initiative is being seen as a major achievement under the Digital India programme, especially in the education sector. UP Board Secretary Bhagwati Singh said that the goal is to improve transparency, promote discipline, and eliminate fake enrolments that have long been a challenge for the board.
Attendance Through Mobile App: A New System for Transparency
The Uttar Pradesh Education Department has announced that all UP schools must now use the mobile app and online portal to mark attendance daily. Attendance will be recorded class-wise and section-wise to provide detailed and accurate data.
Schools are required to specify the reason for every absence, whether due to illness, personal reasons, or other causes. Failure to follow the process could lead to strict action against teachers and staff responsible.
This digital system aims to ensure regularity among students and teachers while providing real-time data that can help in planning, monitoring, and policy decisions.

75 Percent Attendance Rule
The UP Board has made it clear that students must have at least 75 percent attendance to be eligible for board examinations. This rule is designed to tackle fake enrolments and encourage students to attend school regularly.
For many years, the board has struggled with cases where students were enrolled on paper but did not actually attend classes. By digitising attendance, the board hopes to bring greater honesty and accuracy to the system.
Strengthening the Education System
In addition to attendance, teachers will now be required to upload students’ marks through the mobile app. They must also include a selfie for verification when submitting marks.
This added step is meant to ensure that data on student performance is authentic and reliable. The UP Board believes this system will not only improve attendance but also help enhance the overall quality of education.
By holding both students and teachers accountable, the board hopes to create a more disciplined and transparent system that benefits everyone.
A Step Towards Digital India
The move to digitise attendance aligns with the larger vision of Digital India, which aims to use technology to improve public services, including education. UP schools are now setting an example of how technology can help solve long-standing issues in the education sector.
With real-time data and improved monitoring, the system promises to make schools more efficient, fair, and future-ready. It is expected to strengthen trust among students, parents, teachers, and policymakers.
As this initiative begins, UP schools are preparing to adapt to this digital shift, marking the start of a new chapter in the state’s education reforms.
