Dr. Ajay Kumar, an IAS officer from the 1985 batch of the Kerala cadre, previously served as India’s Defence Secretary from August 23, 2019, to October 31, 2022, before taking on the UPSC chairperson role.

He has also held senior positions in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
