The DUSU Election Results 2026 have brought a significant outcome in Delhi University’s student politics, with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) winning three of the four central panel posts. Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen, a former National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) member, won the vice-president’s position after defeating candidates from both ABVP and NSUI.

The results were announced on September 19, following voting across Delhi University. ABVP secured the president, secretary and joint secretary posts, while NSUI failed to win any position on the central panel. The outcome came amid discussions around student concerns, including education, examination irregularities, accommodation and campus safety.

ABVP Wins Three Central Panel Posts

ABVP candidates secured three key positions in the 2026 DUSU elections. Yash Dabas won the president’s post, Riya Chhawadi was elected secretary and Lakshya Raj Singh won the joint secretary’s position.

Dabas defeated NSUI candidate Vijay Shankar Meena by 2,053 votes. Chhawadi won the secretary’s post by a margin of 6,781 votes, while Singh secured the joint secretary position by 837 votes.

The results allowed ABVP to retain its presence across most of the central panel, while the vice-president’s contest produced a different result.

Independent Candidate Deepanshu Shokeen Wins Vice-President Post

Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen won the vice-president’s election by a substantial margin. He secured 30,615 votes, defeating ABVP candidate Ishu Maurya, who received 16,910 votes. NSUI candidate Virr Chatrath polled 4,313 votes.

Shokeen had previously been associated with NSUI and had sought a ticket from the organisation. ThePrint reported that he was not included in the final NSUI panel and subsequently contested the election as an Independent.

However, Congress communication department member Amitabh Dubey disputed the claim that NSUI had denied Shokeen a ticket. Dubey stated that Shokeen had been offered the president’s ticket but declined it before contesting the vice-president’s post independently.

NSUI Fails to Secure Any Central Panel Seat

The 2026 results marked the first time since 2015 that NSUI did not win a seat on the DUSU central panel, according to ThePrint’s report. In the previous two elections, the organisation had secured one post each year.

ABVP has remained a major force in DUSU elections over the past decade. The organisation won three of the four central posts in several elections, including 2016, 2018, 2019, 2023 and 2025. In 2017 and 2024, ABVP and NSUI divided the four posts between them

The latest result reflects the continued competition between student organisations over representation within Delhi University.

DUSU Campaigns Focused on Gen Z Outreach

The election took place nearly two months after Gen Z-led protests brought issues involving education, examination irregularities and youth concerns into public discussion. Both ABVP and NSUI attempted to connect with younger voters through reels, memes and AI-driven social media content.

Following his victory, DUSU president-elect Yash Dabas described the result as a message from Gen Z and linked the outcome to ABVP’s campaign. His statement represented the organisation’s interpretation of the election result, while other political and student groups offered differing views.

The election outcome does not establish a single explanation for voting patterns. Student priorities, candidate-specific campaigns, organisational support and local campus issues may all have influenced the result.

Student Issues Remain Central to DUSU Politics

The 2026 DUSU elections were held against the backdrop of concerns surrounding student accommodation and campus infrastructure, including the recent Satya Niketan building collapse. Student safety and hostel facilities featured among the issues discussed during the election period.

After the results, ABVP representatives highlighted student safety and accommodation as areas requiring attention. Meanwhile, opposition voices questioned the interpretation of the results and raised concerns about the broader political implications of the election.

The election has therefore placed renewed attention on the role of student unions in addressing practical campus concerns, including hostel availability, safety, education facilities and student representation.

The DUSU Election Results 2026 have produced an ABVP-led central panel, alongside an independent vice-president whose victory followed his separation from the NSUI selection process. The outcome is likely to shape discussions around student representation and campus priorities during the new term
