Delhi Announces School Holiday Before BRICS Summit
Schools across Delhi will remain closed on September 11, 2026, ahead of the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit scheduled in the national capital. The holiday has been announced through a circular issued by the Directorate of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi.
The closure will apply to government schools, government-aided schools and unaided recognised private schools under the Directorate of Education. Offices functioning under the Directorate will also remain closed on the day.
Why Are Delhi Schools Closed on September 11?
The decision has been taken in view of preparations for the BRICS Summit, which is scheduled to be held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from September 11 to 13.
The closure is intended to help authorities manage security arrangements, traffic movement and logistical requirements associated with the high-profile international gathering.
Which Schools Will Observe the Holiday?
The September 11 holiday will cover all schools under the Delhi Directorate of Education.
This includes government schools as well as government-aided and unaided recognised private schools. Therefore, students and parents across Delhi will need to account for the additional day off when planning their schedules.
BRICS Summit to Bring Major Security Arrangements
The 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit is expected to bring several international leaders and representatives to New Delhi.
The event will involve heightened security and extensive traffic-management measures across several parts of the capital. Authorities have been conducting preparations and traffic rehearsals ahead of the summit to minimise disruption.
Traffic Restrictions Expected Across Delhi
The summit preparations are also expected to affect road movement in several parts of Delhi.
More than 35 roads and multiple diversion points have been identified for traffic management during summit-related movements. Areas around central and south Delhi, including routes connecting major hotels and Bharat Mandapam, are expected to see restrictions or diversions.
The school holiday is therefore also expected to reduce regular commuter movement and ease pressure on the city’s roads during the summit preparations.
What Students and Parents Should Know
Students will not be required to attend school on Friday, September 11 if their institution falls under the categories covered by the Directorate of Education circular.
The BRICS Summit itself is scheduled across September 11 to 13, with the main leaders’ proceedings taking place in New Delhi. Since September 12 and 13 fall on the weekend, the September 11 closure provides an additional day of school holiday.
Delhi Schools to Resume After Holiday
The September 11 closure is a one-day holiday announced specifically in connection with BRICS Summit arrangements. Schools are expected to resume their normal schedule after the holiday, subject to any further directions issued by the Delhi government or Directorate of Education.
