Austria Strengthens Education Ties with India Through New University Collaboration

Austria is stepping up its education partnership with India. On Friday, Austrian Ambassador to India Katharina Wieser, along with Armstrong Pame, Joint Secretary at the Union Ministry of Education, announced a new collaboration between Austria’s top technical universities and VFS Education Services. The idea is simple: make it easier for bright Indian students to study in Austria, especially in engineering and STEM fields, while also strengthening ties between the two countries.

Who’s Involved?

Three of Austria’s most prestigious universities are part of this initiative:

  • TU Wien (Vienna University of Technology)
  • TU Graz
  • TU Leoben

Together, they’re offering spots for Indian students to pursue Master’s programmes, with some Bachelor’s seats also available at TU Leoben.

What Can You Study?

If you’re into engineering, sciences, or emerging technologies, the options are exciting. Courses span metallurgy, biotechnology, robotics, AI, green chemistry, petroleum engineering, sustainable tech, software engineering, and more. TU Leoben even has special Bachelor’s programmes in geo-energy and circular engineering.

These are not just classroom-heavy courses. They’re designed to combine theory with hands-on industry experience — internships, lab work, and real-world placements.

Why Austria?

Ambassador Wieser put it like this:

  • Austria has a long tradition of excellence in engineering, quantum mechanics, and AI.
  • University fees are very affordable — just €726.72 per semester, plus a small student union fee.
  • Safety is high, campuses are welcoming, and most programmes are taught in English.

She summed it up nicely: “Moderate fees do not mean moderate education. Quite the contrary — Austria treats higher education as a public good.”

Another big plus? After finishing your degree, you get a one-year visa extension to gain international work experience. From there, you can even move on to Austria’s Red-White-Red Card or an EU Blue Card for jobs across Europe.

Why Indian Students, Specifically?

Europe is seeing fewer local students choosing STEM fields, while industries are crying out for talent. India, meanwhile, has a huge pool of bright minds — many who miss out on IITs and NITs by just a few marks.

Pame pointed out that India’s goal is to push its Gross Enrolment Ratio from under 30% to 50% by 2035. Austria, by partnering now, can channel that talent greatly.

How Do You Apply?

  • You need a BE/BTech/BSc (Hons) degree in a relevant field from an ANABIN-recognised Indian institution.
  • Minimum GPA: 2.5 on the Austrian scale (about 65–70% in Indian grading).
  • Proof of English proficiency.

Applications are open for the Summer and Winter 2026 intakes. You can apply through the VFS Education Services portal (vfsedu.com) or email your documents to austria@vfsedu.com.

The Numbers

  • 300+ Master’s seats across TU Wien, TU Graz, and TU Leoben.
  • Around 15 Bachelor’s seats at TU Leoben.
  • Tuition fee: €726.72 per semester + €25 union fee.
  • Living expenses (travel, accommodation, insurance, etc.) are extra.

Work & Life in Austria

  • Students can work up to 20 hours a week during studies.
  • Universities also offer lab and admin jobs to students.
  • Austria has strong safety measures, even assigning English-speaking police contacts for international students.

And yes — while German is the national language, three-quarters of courses are in English, so you won’t need to speak German from day one. But learning it later can help with jobs and integration.

Looking Ahead

Austria doesn’t plan to set up independent campuses in India right now. Instead, it’s focusing on joint programmes with IITs and other universities, encouraging Indian students to go experience Austria’s education system and culture firsthand.

Ambassador Wieser said it plainly: “Our companies are desperate for skilled graduates. We know India has the talent to meet that demand.”
