Delhi Steps Up: Universities Join Forces to Build a Drug-Free Future
Delhi’s Social Welfare Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh in a strong move to combat the growing concern of drug addiction among youth, has reached out to the vice-chancellors of all universities in the capital. His appeal comes just ahead of the 26th International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, urging educational institutions to become active players in the fight against substance abuse.
In his official letter, the Minister emphasized the critical role that universities play in shaping a healthy and responsible generation. He highlighted the growing threat of drug addiction, calling it a serious issue that not only ruins lives but also tears families and communities apart. According to him, “The dream of a healthy, empowered, and drug-free Delhi can only be achieved with strong public and institutional participation.”
The Role of Educational Institutions
As part of this initiative, Singh has called for immediate steps to be taken by universities, including the formation of Nasha Mukti Clubs on every campus. These clubs will be dedicated to spreading awareness, promoting peer-led initiatives, and encouraging open discussions around addiction and recovery.
Moreover, he urged institutions to officially declare their campuses as drug-free zones, backed by visible signage and strict enforcement policies. The letter also recommended appointing specific nodal officers in each university who would be responsible for coordinating all anti-drug activities.
To ensure accountability and measurable impact, universities have been asked to regularly upload their campaign updates to the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA) portal or mobile application. The data will contribute to national tracking and help analyze the reach and success of the initiative.
Building Awareness Through Engagement
Understanding that awareness must go beyond lectures and posters, the Minister encouraged universities to take a more creative approach in engaging students. He proposed organizing street plays, short film contests, cultural programs, and sports events that center around the theme of a drug-free lifestyle.
To amplify the campaign’s reach, Singh advised tapping into alumni networks, partnering with social media influencers, and involving student volunteers to become champions of the cause. These efforts aim to normalize conversations about addiction and prevention while removing the stigma around seeking help.
Additionally, universities have been reminded of their responsibility to ensure the ban on the sale of tobacco products within 100 meters of their premises is strictly followed.
A United Front for a Greater Impact
This push is part of the broader Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA) — a national initiative led by the Government of India that focuses on reducing drug demand and building a drug-free society. Delhi’s Department of Social Welfare acts as the nodal agency for this mission in the capital and is playing an active role in coordinating efforts on the ground.
To streamline communication and collaboration, the department will also launch a dedicated WhatsApp group where nodal officers from various universities can share updates, event photos, data, and progress reports. This real-time channel will foster better coordination and quicker response mechanisms.
Invitation to a Landmark Event
As part of the awareness drive, the Delhi government is also organizing a large-scale public event at the Yamuna Sports Complex at 9 a.m., marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The event is expected to see massive participation from students, faculty, and civil society groups.
The Minister’s call to action is clear: universities must not remain passive observers but must rise to the occasion and lead from the front. With the right approach, commitment, and energy, Delhi’s educational institutions can be a powerful force in creating a healthier, addiction-free future for all.
